On September 30, 1999 the Main Office of the Orange County Public Defender located at 14 Civic Center Plaza in Santa Ana was dedicated to the memory of Ronald Y. Butler, Public Defender from 1981 - 1997.

Honored guests included Charles Smith, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Todd Spitzer, Jan Mittermeier, County Executive Officer, Kathleen O'Leary, Presiding Judge of the Orange County Superior Court and numerous Orange County Superior Court Judges, District Attorney Tony Rackauckas, Jerry Hicks, Columnist for the Los Angeles Times, hundreds of county employees and the wife and family of Ron Butler.

Public Defender Carl Holmes spoke fondly of his good friend and colleague, Ron Butler.  Ron's widow, Tracy Butler and members of Ron's family unveiled the plaque which will be affixed to the Ronald Y. Butler Building. It contains an image of Ron and the following words first spoken by an 18th century Irish jurist: "The Price of Freedom is Eternal Vigilance."
